Marvin Mims is an electric wide receiver from Oklahoma who set Texas high school records for career receiving yards (5,485) and single season receiving yards with 2,629 to go along with 32 touchdowns on 117 catches as a senior . His route running is superb and sometimes has a “Justin Jefferson” -esque feel when it comes to “how can he be that wide open?” Every time he steps on the field you have to keep an eye on him, be it lined up anywhere in the formation or running end-arounds and/or jet sweeps. Mims has also had three solid years of production at Oklahoma; this isn’t a one-year wonder or a Combine Warrior.
Catching report. Highlight reel catch after highlight reel catch. The difficulty of the catches he makes must be seen to be believed. His concentration is fascinating, not only on passes that may be batted juggled, but the way he contorts his body to work back to the ball. It is truly special to watch.
Running report. Marvin Mims just gets open, plain and simple. I loved how he comes back to the ball if need be. Even though some may consider him “undersized” he can and did line up all over the field.
Weakness. Marvin is a little on the smaller side, and even though he ran a 4.38 40, it seemed that he was chased down by defenders for no good reason. At 5’11 184, does he struggle versus bigger defenders going up for contested catches? His route running may be a question but is it a question of what he was asked to do in college or is it a bigger issue that his turns and breaks from more complex routes are lacking.
Summary: Lazy comparison? Antonio Brown was the first player that came to mind, a smaller player that made big plays without backing down from anyone. He strikes me as a clutch player who will make the key grab and get precious yards after the catch.
