2023 Outlook

The Bears finished the 2022 season with the worst record in football with a dismal 3-14. To rebound from that in 2023, QB Justin Fields needs to take a decent step forward in his passing performance. We know Fields can run the ball, as evidence of his 1,143 yards rushing last season, but struggled mightily in the pass game while averaging only 21 pass attempts per game last season. To help with that progression, the Bears went out and made one of the biggest moves of the offseason by trading away the 2023 1st overall draft selection to the Carolina Panthers and received several draft picks as well as WR DJ Moore. Moore Provides a huge boost to the WR core that desperately needed a big-time playmaker. Alongside Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool, the WR becomes formidable instead of dreadful like the year before. The draft selection of T Darnell Wright to be the new anchor of the offensive line will only help Fields next season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the offseason was highlighted by the free agency acquisitions of LB’s TJ Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds. After the departure of Roquan Smith, the Bears desperately needed a new LB to anchor the middle of their defense. They decided to double down on top-end LB talent where they will pair together for the next three seasons. They also used premium draft capital to select DL Gervon Dexter, CB Tyrique Stevenson and DL Zacch Pickens all in the 2nd round to further bolster their defensive depth.
