2023 Outlook
The Packers stumbled into the offseason after a loss to the Detroit Lions in the final game of the NFL regular season. That appeared to be the nail in the coffin of the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay as he was traded to the New York Jets just before the 2023 NFL Draft. They lost a lot more than just Rodgers on offense during this offseason; they also lost receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb (who followed Rodgers to the Jets) as well as tight ends Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis. In steps 20th overall pick in 2020 Jordan Love who has been officially given the reins of the Green Bay offense. The running game should ease the pressure on Love as the formidable tandem of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon returns. The pass catching corps is a bit less proven: second year receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs return to provide weapons on the outside while also adding Jayden Reed who was drafted in the second round of this year’s draft. Tight end also received a jolt of youth drafting Luke Musgrave in the second round and Tucker Kraft in the third round. The offense has plenty of potential; whether they can take that step this year remains to be seen.
The defense has been solid over the past few seasons. Led by veteran playmakers in CB Jaire Alexander, LB De’Vondre Campbell and DL Rashan Gary, they look to be the stronger side of the ball for the Packers this season. Second year players Devonte Wyatt and Quay Walker also look to bring their game a step further to push 13th overall pick Lukas Van Ness to his best in his rookie year. The defense will keep the team in games if the offense struggles early.
Not to be forgotten, K Mason Crosby recently announced his retirement who was a reliable leg during his career with the Packers. They drafted K Anders Carlson to potentially take the open kicking job.
